Tails, being something that pre-humans had, are something that was "selected out" through evolution. It seems to me that tails are a benefit to those animals who have them (which is most of them), which makes me wonder if it was sexual selection that eliminated them. "Oh, Gorgar...he's *cuuuuuute*! But, I just ain't into guy's with tails," thinks Hildar.
