Hey, people, it is August, so it must be time for the Perseid Meteor shower. Yup, it is. This year the shower peaks on Monday night, August 12. It actually starts a couple of days before peak and goes a couple of days past as well. The shower is best viewed after midnight. That is when all the camchatters are up anyway, right? The past two years we haven’t gotten to see much of it because of the brightness of the moon. This year however,we should, weather permitting, see it without any lunar interference. These meteors are bits of debris left behind from the Swift- Tuttle comet that passed near the sun in 1992. Now, the Earth is passing through the debris and streaks are made as the debris enter the Earth’s atmosphere and vaporize about 80 miles out. Stay out late, face east, sit back and relax and you may see up to 100 meteors over the course of an hour. Good luck stargazers. Ah hem, sounds like a great reason for a party!

I always enjoy the august showers, I wish they were more like the leonid shower though...that was awesome noise effects & all. I can live without a blasted broken car window though, that sucked! |

Man - August 12th is a night that I should go to bed early.Or, maybe I'll just stay up all night. No, that wouldn't be a good idea. Hmm.... I've a plane to catch in the morning. *sigh* |

I went out after midnight pst and didn't see anything so I went back out at 1 am...saw a few so I went back in at around 3 am saw quite a lot. Not the 60 or so an hour we were told were possible i'd say between 3-4 am I saw about 30. Not as many as the Leonids but these ones lasted a lot longer across the sky. (I was trying to find out if these ones made the hiss like the Leonids but I didn't hear a thing.) |
