Hmmm. I dunno, Ouro. ;)
I have found that most people I converse with on line use "chat-speak" as a form of short-hand. It may be a little hard to understand at first, but I see the reason behind the use. And, I try to never use the written word to determine someone's intelligence level (At times, though, lack of intelligence is obvious).
I, for example, have an above average IQ and excelled in English courses throughout High School and college. However, I cannot spell to save my life. I have burned up three Spell Check programs! (Okay, I'm kidding, but I do keep a dictionary next to the computer, and I use it daily. =) I do find that *correct spelling* makes it easier to understand what someone is trying to say, but if you are in a chat, and trying to get your point across before someone changes the subject on you, most people would not take the time to research proper grammar. I know I don't.
As for occasional slang, I find that it makes me comfortable with that person. Almost like sitting across the table from them, having a face-to-face conversation. Relaxed, comfortable... I actually find it quite endearing. They earn my respect by being themselves, and by not being self-conscious about their 'lack' of grammar skills.
Your post on this subject, Ouro, for those who don't know you, may come across as pompous and arrogant. (For those of us that *do* know you though, well, we already know that you ARE pompous and arrogant.) KIDDING!!! heheh
Besides. Life is too short to limit your relationships just because someone doesn't use what one personally determines to be 'acceptable terminology'.
You really see "nothing wrong with socially ostracizing those who fail to make the deliberate choice to develop their vocabularies and to choose proper grammar"??? Food for thought, I guess, but not my cup of tea (Uh, slang for 'Not to my liking' :D ).
I cannot fathom how many wonderful, enriching friendships I would have missed out on had I felt this way. And now I wonder just how many people have judged *my* intelligence level as low, due to my lack of spelling and punctuation skills!

BTW, Ouro. Nice idea for a forum. Teehee!!
