Here's something I've previously posted about Roberts (ugh). I hope that she never visits any of the sites I've posted this on, 'cause it's definitely somewhat hurtful (Jenny McCarthy has spoken on talk shows about how she'll go to chat rooms [for fun, just like the rest of us] and sometimes, just out of curiousity, will mention her name and will feel hurt by what some people have to say about her); still, I want this saved on the board 'cause I have a feeling that I'm going to want to post it elsewhere later on in other board conversations:

Finally someone who agrees with me that Julia Roberts is freaky!
I think nearly everyone agrees with that. The reason that Julia Roberts is on top is for the same reason that Bill Clinton was elected president (twice): Women put her there. Julia Roberts is a woman's choice for what men should like, not men's.
Consider, for example, the movie which sent her to the top - the ultimate chick flick: Pretty Woman.
The Man: He's everything the woman wants. He's completely missed the "men's liberation movement." He makes all the money (she makes none). He's suave, debonairre, and handsome. He's a rich gentleman (emphasis on gentleman) with lots of power. And at the end of the movie, he even plays the classic fairy tale role of the "white knight" who comes riding in on his steed (limosine) waving his sword (symbolically, at least - his umbrella), and then climbs her tower (fire escape) to sweep her off into the sunset where they'll get married. The woman who has and contributes nothing finds her prince charming. And, he's not missed the "woman's liberation movement" at all (see below).
The woman: Let's face it - she's ugly. How ugly? BUTT UGLY. Crystal posted in another thread about how the women in movies that men choose as good looking are a type of "beautiful" that is impossible for most women to achieve. But that isn't Julia; in fact, an average real life woman, just out of bed in the morning, hair up in curlers, wearing a worn out pink cotton robe, leaning back on a recliner with freshly painted toenails and cotton balls between her toes, smoking cigarettes and having her first coffee of the day is pretty much on par with Julia.
And she's liberated. The stereotype in the US is that if a woman sleeps around with a lot of guys, she's a slut and basically undesirable to men. Julia, in Pretty Woman, doesn't worry about that at all - in fact, that concept is pushed to extremes: she's a stretched out hooker. But does Richard Gere care? No, he's liberated too. In fact, her being the extreme end of slutty is what gives rise to them meeting and falling in love. So - yet one more ingredient to make it the ultimate chick flick movie - right from the start he's not only the rich and handsome white knight that contributes everything to the relationship, and who is interested - not in the types of women that Crystal pointed out that men typically choose - but is instead interested in this woman with a level of beauty that is so easy to achieve that 70% of the women out there accomplish it just by waking up in the morning and stumbling to the coffee pot, but he's actually giving her money for sex! (Now, c'mon, in the real world, if Gere and Roberts were to have prostitutional sex, who would be paying who?)
Give just one year w/out women being able to buy box office tickets, and I guarantee that no one would ever hear of Roberts again.
Ugh. I'm going to lie back and think of Britney Spears, Angie Harmon, Jenny McCarthy, and Terry Farrell for a while to get that image out of my mind.
